In our increasingly connected world, technology has opened up amazing opportunities for cross-cultural connections and learning. As an online English teacher with VIPKid, I’ve had the privilege of forming a special bond with one remarkable student over the past two years — a talented artist named Zoga from Lhasa, China.
Our weekly virtual classroom sessions have been so much more than just language lessons. Through the camera lens, we’ve formed a teacher-student relationship that transcends borders. Zoga has blossomed into an incredible English speaker, but she’s also shared her passion for art by gifting me with a stunning sketch portrait she drew of me.
This treasured piece is a symbol of the mutual appreciation that has developed between us. While I’ve guided Zoga’s English skills, she has enriched my life with her creativity and thoughtfulness. Her sketch reminds me that teaching is about building connections.
The importance of going beyond just class time and nurturing the student-teacher dynamic can’t be overstated. We’ve stayed in touch through emails, discussing life, interests, and learning not just from materials but from each other’s experiences.
Zoga has expressed how much she enjoys and values our online lessons together. For me, it’s been incredibly rewarding watching her blossom and receiving her heartfelt gesture of the sketch. Her artistic talents are outshined only by her kindness.
In today’s world, we have the ability to form impactful bonds across nations through virtual education platforms. My experience with Zoga is a testament to the power of these connections. We’ve built a cross-cultural bridge of mutual understanding, appreciation, and skill-sharing.
As I proudly display Zoga’s sketch, I’m reminded that the greatest lessons aren’t just taught, but lived — through compassion, openness and celebrating each other’s gifts. The intersection of education and technology facilitated an unlikely friendship that I’ll always cherish.
